TERRAIN HIGHLIGHT:
Altoona Lakes Basin

Nestled directly behind the lodge, guests can tour to the top of the basin in under and hour. The basin offers countless ski descents ranging from intermediate to expert. This is an excellent spot for powder laps.

The Self Guided Trips at Altoona Ridge Lodge are for groups who want to have their own exclusive trip into the backcountry. Experience an adventure of being the only people on the planet.

Skiers and hikers come to the Lodge and handle all the logistics of their trip. People participating on this trip have free reign of the Lodge's facilities. Whether it's the sauna in The Wild Rose Chalet, the kitchen, living room and deck of The Chalet Lupine, or a good night's sleep in the Bear Den Chalet, every inch of the Lodge is yours. As much terrain as you can ski and hike for as many days as you can stay is included as well. The Flint Creek Mountains of Western Montana become your playground. Every inch of this natural wonderland is yours, and all we ask is you respect the forest and others.

You are welcome to bring your own snowmobile to the Lodge. The snowmobiling opportunities from the lodge are expansive. However, there is no snowmobile access to the ski-able areas, there are no access roads in to the skiing areas, and the trees are very tight. We tried to make this are more accessible, and Mother Nature got the best of us.

The Altoona Ridge Lodge has beds for up to 8 people in the comfortable quarters in the Bear Den, a new addition as of November, 2009. The Bear Den is heated with a wood burning stove. After a day in the woods, there is no better feeling than a warm, cozy, dry space where you can shed your ski wear, relax, put on comfy clothes, and get a great nights sleep. The Bear Den sleeps 8 on the futon beds. There are also 2 private rooms, each with a queen bed. A bunk bed is also located in each room to provide space for an extra person, or your gear. Off to the side of the foyer there are 3 single bunks. The main room is long and narrow with lots of places to hang and store gear.

An optional snowmobile portage for your gear is available from the trailhead in Maxville. The cost is $40 per group of 4 people during the winter months. When you contact us, we will provide you with all the information you need about pick-ups and shuttles to and from Maxville, other points beyond in Montana, summer shuttles up the mountain, and even the 2 hour drive to and from Missoula.
